A guide is given to India's bustling cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Bangalore and Srinagar, as well the country's stunning natural attractions including Goa's beaches, the Himalayas, the desert of Rajasthan and Kanha's tiger reserve. Descriptions of tourist attractions include the Taj Mahal, the Ellora and Ajanta cave temples, Khajuraho's erotic sculptures and Jaipur's Amber Palace. Background historical information, advice on shopping and entertainment and the low-down on Indian food bring the country alive. There is an A-Z of practical information, listings of recommended hotels and restaurants and useful expressions in Hindi. You can learn about topics ranging from Indian music to medicine and the religions of India to harems. Maps show Delhi, India, Mumbai (Bombay) and Kolkata, and there are dozens of colour photographs throughout.

Extract:
This subcontinent is so rich and varied that the choice of what to see on a first visit can be daunting. Don't even think of "doing" India the way people "do" Europe. With some judicious selection from among the places we suggest, you can most certainly get a pretty good feel for the country in the four weeks that most people devote to a first trip. Even if you have a distinct taste for improvisation and a horror of schedules and detailed itineraries, you must accept from the outset, if your time is at all limited, that travelling around India will demand a certain amount of planning. Remember, there are over one billion Indians out there, and a lot of them will be on the move at the same time as you will be, therefore competing for plane seats and hotel rooms. So you will need to make at least some advance reservations for hotels in principal cities and especially for your major plane or train journeys. This will still leave you plenty of room for getting off the beaten track and staying overnight in new and unexpected places.
