Details
One of the titles in a series of indexed maps covering the main states of Brazil at a various scales from 1:650,000 and 1:1,700,000, with a much larger number of small towns and villages than on more general maps of the country. The maps show six classes of roads, including unsurfaced tracks, indicating difficult or dangerous sections. Road numbers and, where appropriate, road names are clearly marked, with locations of toll barriers, petrol stations and traffic police stations.

Railways, local airports (indicating those with regular services) and state boundaries are also shown. There is no information on topography beyond the rivers and lakes network, plus names of main mountain and hill ranges, but national parks and other protected areas are highlighted. Symbols mark various places of interest including historical locations, spas and mountain resorts, etc. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at intervals between 1°and 15’ depending on the map scale. Map legend is in Portuguese only. All the maps include an extensive index of localities and a table of distance.

The series is currently being re-designed; latest editions have on the reverse extensive lists of hotels and restaurants in the major cities of the state, providing full contact details, facilities indicated by symbols, price range, etc. All the text in the accompanying explanation of symbols is in Portuguese only.

Other maps have diagrams of major routes, showing main connections, towns, services, distances, etc. Also included are an indexed street plan of the state capital and basic plans of other larger towns, indicating bus terminals and notable sites.

In this title: an indexed street plan of Rio de Janeiro city centre, a more general map showing access to and main roads within the whole city, and small plans showing access to and main roads within eight more towns in the state.
