The area of the Costa del Maresme stretches some 38 km (24 miles) from Mataro, north of Barcelona, to the Rio Tordero, where the Costa Brava begins. Maresme means a low-lying coastal region susceptible to flooding, and it could hardly be in more complete contrast to the rugged cliffs of the neighboring coast. Here the beaches are long and narrow, and often divided from the towns whose name they bear by the railway and busy N11 road that run parallel to the coast. (To reach the beach you first have to find the subway!) In many places, the Costa del Maresme is less developed than the Costa Dorada, and is almost exclusively the retreat of Spanish holidaymakers. The train is also a boon to anyone who wants to avoid the famous traffic jams. At weekends and during the summer holidays, the N11 is bumper-to-bumper with frustrated Barcelonans.
