The Berlitz Corfu Pocket Guide covers all the major sights, area by area, in an easily navigable format. Descriptions of tourist attractions include the island's best beaches, ancient wonders such as the Temple of Artemis and Corcyra, and spectacular scenic areas including Mount Pantokrator and the Bay of Paleokastritsa. The guide also contains background historical information, advice on shopping and entertainment and the low-down on Greek cuisine. There is an A-Z of practical information, listings of recommended hotels and restaurants and useful expressions in Greek. The book also contains special features on topics ranging from olives to Ulysses. Excursions to the idyllic islands of Paxos and Antipaxos, and the mainland village of Parga are also outlined. Maps show Corfu and Corfu Town, and there are dozens of colour photographs throughout.

Although Kerkyra Town is in many ways the heart and soul of the island, like most capitals it is neither typical nor representative. Unless you are travelling independently or just visiting Corfu on a whistle-stop tour, it is unlikely that you will be staying overnight in Kerkyra Town.

The vast majority of Corfu's visitors are on package tours and invariably stay on the coast at a broad range of accommodation - from cheap-and-cheerful hotels to luxury villas. Most such visitors are simply looking for "rest and recreation". Nonetheless, Kerkyra Town acts as a magnet for shoppers, culture vultures, or the merely curious, and it rarely disappoints. Located about halfway down the east coast, it is within striking distance of any spot on the island and thus makes a useful reference point for us to begin our island tour.
