Details
One of the titles in a series of brightly coloured maps of Tanzania’s national parks and conservation areas in the publisher’s characteristic hand-drawn style of cartography. The maps include plenty of tourist information and enlargements for the most visited areas and hiking routes, with many titles providing a vivid picture of the changes to the terrain and vegetation during the dry and the wet seasons. The maps are illustrated in the margins with beautiful drawings of local flora and/or fauna and animal footprints for easy identification.
In this title: a lovely map of the Kilimanjaro National Park on one side and an enlargement of the summit with profiles of various routes on the reverse. The main map shows entry gates to the park, various routes to the summit and circuits around it, plus huts and bivouac camps. An additional chart provides information on changes in local vegetation and terrain according to the altitude, from Arusha to the snow-covered summit of the mountain. There is also a small map of the region with main roads linking the park with Arusha, Moshi, and the airport.
On the reverse, a detailed map of the summit itself has contours at 50m intervals and indicates various climbing routes, all annotated with approximate ascent times. Neither the main map nor the summit map have any geographical co-ordinates. A series of profiles provide more detailed information and timing for reaching the summit along the Marangu and Machame routes. There are also beautiful drawings of examples of local flora, and extensive advice on the park itself and the routes to the crater.
