Guide to India’s main railway routes and schedules, with a folded railway map attached to the back cover. An introductory section provides information on the country’s railway system: zones, regional offices, ticket system, reservations, passenger facilities, etc. A schedule of Important Trains provides, for each route, the train name, terminal stations, distance, days on which the service runs, arrival and departure times at the terminal points and, for some routes, at selected important intermediate stations. An alphabetical train index lists important services by name (eg.Chandigarth Express) with train numbers also indicated, and there is also an index for important stations. Both lists are cross-referenced to the schedule as an aid to finding the basic route information you need. Fares are tabulated according to distance travelled, and also for several particular express routes.
A separate section is concerned with timetable information for the Konkan Railway linking Mumbai to Mangalore along the west coast. Suburban railway maps are included for Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, and some general information on ten special tourist trains is also included.
The indexed railway map distinguishes the different zones and shows intermediate distances along many routes. It is intended as an aid to finding the appropriate Important Train information in the text, but it is worth noting that spellings of place names used in the text are not always the same as those on the map!
