A4 size, 96 page paperback atlas and guide to the most interesting areas of southern and eastern Africa. After the opening pages dealing the region’s geography, history, culture, etc., the atlas is arranged by countries and covers South Africa with Lesotho and Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Seychelles, with an additional chapter for the East African Great Lakes region covering Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi.
Each chapter opens with a general map of the whole country and lists of the best adventures it can offer “on land, in the air, on wheels, on or in water”, with suggestions for the best places for everything from traditional pastimes such as hiking or horse riding to shark cage diving or bridge swing. These are followed by descriptions of the most attractive regions in each country, from the Winelands of the Western Cape and the Garden Route to the source of the Zambezi or Kilimajaro, all accompanied by maps highlighting places of interest, accommodation facilities, etc.
The atlas also includes street plans of the main South African cities and the capitals of the remaining countries (with Blantyre rather than Lilongwe), again annotated with selected accommodation, places of interest, and various services and facilities. There is also a distance table and lists of contact details, country by country, of organizations providing various activities.
All in all, an excellent present for anyone planning or fantasizing about escaping from the humdrum of every day suburban life.
