Details
Hardback volume of reference maps and detailed information on over 250 national parks and reserves in South Africa, with street plans and a general tourist atlas section for the whole country. Organised province by province, the highlights of each location are described and accompanied by a clear road map indicating such features as sites of particular interest, campgrounds, lodges, reserve boundaries, mountain peaks and passes, 4x4 tracks, railways and road distances. Essential visitor information is listed eg. nearest town and airport, opening times, contact details for the park and for local accommodation, fauna and flora you may see.
The atlas is illustrated throughout with colour photographs, and includes an overview map of the parks and reserves covered, and a 24-page road atlas at 1:1,500,000. Road detail includes secondary untarred roads, scenic routes, 4x4 roads, mountain passes and intermediate driving distances. There is no graphic relief information, but mountain peaks are identified and marsh areas are shown. Symbols highlight toll roads, airports, border posts, accommodation and sites of interest. A selection of central street plans for 15 towns and cities are also provided, showing local landmarks, sites of interest, information offices and car parks.
The final section presents an overview of the neighbouring countries: Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, but not Lesotho and Swaziland. There is a basic road map for each, highlighting parks and reserves, accompanied by some brief text on the geography and attractions. The book is indexed for park and reserve entries and for locations in the atlas, although the latter are only provided with a page number rather than map coordinates.
