Details
A 116-page, paperback atlas with maps, street plans, photographs, and descriptions of the province’s main places of interest. The opening notes on the history of the Western Cape and the possibilities it offers for outdoor recreation are followed by a section on Cape Town, with the Peninsula and the Winelands. The “Out of Town” chapter covers all the other attractions further afield, including the Garden Route and the Cederberg Mountains. Both sections have numerous maps and street plans annotated with places of interest, accommodation, and other facilities and services, plus descriptions and colour photographs.
The 12 page road atlas section of the province at approx 1:600,000 extends across to the neighbouring Eastern Cape, to cover the whole route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. There is no relief colouring or shading, but mountain ranges are named, with main peaks and passes marked. Places of interest are highlighted.
This is followed by a series of more detailed maps of selected regions: Garden Route, Winelands, the West Coast, Overberg, Olifants River Valley, Breede River Valley, and Klein Karoo at scales ranging from 1:160,000 to 1:350,000. Extensive overprint highlights various types of accommodation, recreational centres, wine farms and estates, and various other facilities and services. The maps are followed by an index and lists of useful addresses. Map legend for all the sections is conveniently placed in the cover flap.
The atlas is one of Stanfords’ bestselling titles for South Africa.
