An A4 sized, spiral bound volume combining road maps with informative text on the region’s attractions, famous destinations and places to stay. The book has been largely designed for self-drive visitors to this remote region, with an emphasis on nature-based activities and attractions, and is illustrated throughout with colour photographs. The text provides a historical overview of the region with an introduction to the themes of geology, terrain, habitats and wildlife, environmental concerns. Trip planning advice is covered along with general guidance on permits, special precautions, responsible camping, communications and safe driving. There are plenty of suggestions for the land- and water-based recreational activities presented in the region, with details for sources of more information. Chapters divide the region into four sections, within which specific locations and attractions are described and cross referenced to the detailed road atlas section at the end of the book. Contact details for organised tours, activities and accommodation are provided and some additional maps are included.
The atlas section is at 1:1,000,000 and presents Hema’s typically clear cartography. Road detail includes minor roads and 4WD tracks, and intermediate driving distances are indicated. Terrain variations are shown, small details - such as homesteads, ruins and waterholes - are marked, and an extensive range of symbols depicts useful locations and features for visitors eg. emergency services, fuel, garages, stores, accommodation, drinking water, campsites, information centres, airstrips etc. The maps are also annotated with further useful information. The book is indexed, and many locations are listed with their GPS coordinates.
