Few countries in Europe still offer the old fashioned thrill of traveling in the unknown. Much of Romania remains unexplored by visitors, and even the better known towns and cities are still very much ignored. That is changing. The Germans spotted Romania's charms first, but now Brits and adventurous Americans are following in their tracks, with the monasteries of Moldavia and the mountains, medieval towns and castles of Southern Transylvania the most popular sights. There is also a buzz about the Danube Delta too; birdwatchers and nature lovers have long known of its unique fauna and flora, now non-experts are finding out what wonders there are in this isolated region. Even the Black Sea resort of Mamaia - full of western package holiday makers in the 1970s and 1980s, deserted in the 1990s - is returning to former glories. Do not be fooled, however: Romania remains an off-the-beaten-track destination, and though numbers of visitors will grow exponentially over the next few years, there will always be something refreshingly off beat about Romania.
