Extract:
Vienna makes life relatively easy for the newcomer by packing nearly all its major attractions inside the Innere Stadt (Inner City). This means that places such as the Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral), the Hofburg (Imperial Palace), the Burgtheater (National Theatre), Mozart's house, the Staatsoper (State Opera) and the shops on and around Kartnerstrasse and the Graben are all within walking distance. Even the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts) and Karlskirche are only just outside the Ringstrasse that marks the medieval precincts of the 1st District.
Romantic or just plain footsore, you may like at least once to take a tour in a Fiaker horse-drawn carriage. Vienna's answer to Venice's gondolas wait at a number of spots around the Innere Stadt, including Stephansplatz, Albertinaplatz and Heldenplatz.
