With a history extending over 2,000 years, Mexico City has served as a centre of culture and commerce for ancient civilisations, European conquistadors and modern Latin America. The capital is centre stage for all aspects of national life - political, financial, intellectual and social. It is a magnet that has drawn nearly one out of five Mexicans to its 350 sprawling colonias, the elegant suburbs, crowded neighbourhoods and ramshackle squatter settlements that hold an estimated 23 million souls. Big as it is, Mexico City is not a metropolis that overpowers, although recent economic hardships have led to a significant increase in crime. It is a remarkable city to visit and, with a wealth of historical and cultural attractions, well worth exploring. Most of its attractions for the tourist lie along the 5-km (3-mile) long axis between the Bosque de Chapultepec park and the Zocalo.
