Extract:
Dubrovnik, the walled city by the sea, is one of the world's most captivating cities. Medieval and magnificent, the 'Pearl of the Adriatic' has a fairytale quality that has attracted visitors for centuries - never more so than today when in summer months around seven cruise ships a day, carrying up to 2,000 passengers each, drop anchor and lead their adventurous troops in search of the city's secrets. In the hour or two that they are here they learn a little, but not a lot, about the former Republic of Ragusa that flourished on the Adriatic's shore. They learn even less of the 45,000 people who live in the city, most of them outside the Old Town in Bonavivo, Grul, Lapad and Ploae. Nor may they realise that the coast has many fine resorts and beautiful islands that are no more than a short bus or ferry-boat ride away.
