A4 size, 208-page paperback atlas with seven long-distance touring routes and street plans of 96 towns and cities. The atlas section covers the whole of South Africa with Lesotho and Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Mozambique, as well as parts Zambia and southern Tanzania. There is no relief colouring or shading, but names of mountain ranges are shown, plus spot heights are given for main peaks and mountain passes indicated along the roads. Pans, dry pans, marshes, and deltas are also shown, with national parks and reserves prominently highlighted. Road network includes 4x4 tracks and shows intermediate driving distances, locations of petrol stations, toll gates and plazas, and border crossings. The map also shows the rail network, places of interest and viewpoints, selected accommodation including campsites, etc. The atlas has no index.
The main feature of the atlas are seven special long-distance (VERY long-distance by European standards!) routes, which can also be combined into a grand circuit of the whole area, e.g. Cape Town to Victoria Falls along the coast of the Indian Ocean, Victoria Falls to Swakopmund on the Namibian Coast, and the route between Swakopmund or Victoria Falls and Cape Town via central Botswana and the Free State Province. Each route is shown on a small map of the whole area covered by the atlas, with a strip indicating the distances between various points along the route. Descriptions are provided for main places of interest, illustrated with photos and annotated with contact addresses for further information, plus more detailed maps of the most interesting areas along each route.
The atlas also includes street plans of 96 cities and towns along the various routes, each showing places of interest, tourist information centres, car parks, places of worship, etc.
