One of the titles in a series of hiking and leisure maps published by New Zealand’s Dept. of Conservation, the body responsible for managing the country’s 14 national parks and several of its forests and other protected areas. Scales and cartography vary according to the area covered. Most titles are based on the 1:50,000 topographic survey, with contours and relief shading, and highlight tramping paths and huts maintained by DOC. On the reverse there are notes describing the areas and various routes, etc.
In this title: contours at 100m intervals with relief shading, plus colours and graphics indicating the type of terrain and vegetation. Overprint shows walking and tramping tracks, including the whole of the 67km long St James Walkway. Symbols highlight campsites plus public and private huts, fresh water supplies, places of interest, etc. The map has a New Zealand Map Grid and latitude/longitude margin ticks at 5’. On the reverse there is an index of localities and geographical features, a day by day guide to St James Walkway, and extensive notes on the area and its fauna and flora.
