Genoa's medieval centre is built on a slope and crossed by a dense warren of narrow alleyways known as carrugi. Lofty dwellings make the streets feel dark even on the brightest days and some are so narrow that a couple of Vespas can hardly squeeze by. For each laundry-draped tenement block there's a splendid ancient monument or a treasure-filled palazzo.
